We Never Saw Them Again

For I dreamt and saw my shipmates on a long sea voyage again

Only now in darkened waters but our old ship just the same

Down In the roaring forties, with waves, so steep, so high

Total darkness all around them, that’s where the terrors lie

But something was amiss for the ship on her side was seen

I saw only by the lightning, then the blackness came between

Flash! And I saw three crew men awash on the old ships side

They hung on to the bilge keel and thought through the storm to ride

Flash! I saw a new wave, high and breaking around the stem

Mighty, towering, with white spume it raced along to them

Burt, Sid and Alan, what lads, what fun, what joy and laughter there

Lightning bright the wave has passed and the ship’s side now lays bare
